I started reading the books Damon gave me to hopefully gain more insight into his mind. I was surprised by how good it felt to be reading a romance novel, and I didn’t think I’d enjoy it as much as I did. The crime subplot was exciting too.
The spontaneous day Damon and I spent together was beautiful, and I still couldn’t believe I was liking another man so much. Not just another man, but one who was as old as my dad. The more time I spent with Damon, the less I wanted to be at home, especially since I had Ari. I didn’t want her to be around my father’s drinking and emotional outbursts.
Damon had invited me to his house that night, and I was glad for the chance to get away.
He didn’t tell me much about what we were going to be doing. Just that he was having a few friends over for a private musical performance. I put on something nice that evening and was feeling nervous to be meeting some of his friends. So far, I’d only met Liam. I wondered what his friends would be like, and I could only assume they’d be really successful like Damon.
I ordered an Uber for Ari and me since Damon asked me to bring her with me.
“Where are you off to now?” my dad asked, as I was putting my shoes on.
“Just to a friend’s house,” I said.
He took a sip of beer. “Since when did you have so many friends?”
I shrugged, not knowing how to answer his question and not wanting to reveal too much to him.
“You’ve been acting different lately,” he said, squinting toward me like he was trying to figure me out.
“Different? How?”
“You’ve been smiling when there’s nothing to smile about. You don’t usually dress up when you’re seeing friends. There’s something you’re not telling me.”
I hadn’t even noticed until my dad mentioned it, but being with Damon had made me so much happier. Damon made me feel safe and secure, and he helped me so much with Ari too. He made me feel like my dreams could actually become reality, whereas my father made me feel like I was never good enough.
“Things are going alright, Dad,” I said. “I’m starting school soon, so there are a lot of things to forward to. There’s nothing else to it and there’s nothing wrong with being happy.”
He scoffed, pulling a cigarette out of his pack. “Happiness is an illusion. There’s no one who’s actually happy in this world. People are only pretending.”
I was feeling so good before and I should’ve known better than to engage in a conversation with him, because now I didn’t feel so good anymore.
“The Uber’s waiting for me outside,” I said. “I have to go. Have a good evening, Dad.”
Without saying anything else, I left the apartment.
As much as my dad annoyed me, I felt bad for him. He truly believed all the negative things that came out of his mouth.
I strapped Ari in the back of the Uber and got in too.
